Concept - Heavy metals

The term "heavy metals" is usually used in the context of elements used in industry and are also toxic to humans and their environment.

Heavy metals include such metals as: lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium, nickel, copper, zinc.

If these metals enter the human body, they are very dangerous to human health and life even in small amounts.

Those most at risk from toxic metal poisoning are those who are in daily contact with these compounds, so for example workers in the chemical industry (e.g. tanneries, household chemicals, plant protection products, plastics and rubber products), fertiliser, pulp and paper, electrical industry, and workers in oil refineries, coal-fired power stations, metallurgy, glass and ceramics, but also for example in cement and asbestos processing.
Shooters and range workers are also at high risk (very high risk of lead poisoning).

Testing

Numerous studies conducted at outdoor and indoor ranges have demonstrated that contact with lead can cause health problems for shooters, instructors, and range personnel (NIOSH 2011; Tripathi et al. 1991; Goldberg et al. 1991).

Heavy metals accumulate in the body, especially in the liver and kidneys, damaging them and can cause acute or chronic poisoning (e.g. from lead or mercury).

They also have a toxic effect on the brain, which is why symptoms of nervous system disorders such as sleep disturbances, concentration and memory problems and even symptoms resembling mental illness often occur. Heavy metals can also cause bone decalcification, infertility, negative changes in the cardiovascular system, damage the fetus, and also promote tumor formation.
