Operation ANTHROPOID
Operation Anthropoid was the codename for a paratroop drop sent from Great Britain to the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia during World War II.
It was formed by soldiers of the Czechoslovak Army in Exile Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš.
It was organized by the special group "D" of the intelligence department of the exiled Ministry of National Defence and was included in the first wave of airborne troops.
It was a diversionary operation that took place between December 1941 and June 1942. Its main objective was to eliminate the acting Reich Protector and head of the RSHA, Reinhard Heydrich.
The attack took place on 27 May 1942 and was successful; Heydrich died of its consequences on 4 June 1942.
Both of its architects paid for their deed with their lives, when together with other paratroopers (Josef Bublík, Jan Hrubý, Adolf Opálka, Jaroslav Švarc, Josef Valčík) succumbed on 18th June 1942 in a battle with a superior force of Nazi soldiers in the Church of St. Cyril and Methodius.
